NIH Whistleblower says U.S.
bungled AIDS study

National Institute of Health (NIH) officials involved in a U.S.-funded study in Uganda endangered the lives of large numbers of patients testing an AIDS drug, nevirapine, because of careless and negligent research practices, a government whistleblower , Dr. Jonathan Fishbein, said recently. FAIR's Board Opts to address NIH policy
rather than individuals

The FAIR Foundation's Board of Directors has opted to have FAIR communicate with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in support of their Director's ban on government research scientists accepting outside income from drug companies. The Board's decision replaces the previously considered effort by FAIR's CEO to communicate with President Bush and call for removal of researchers involved in such conflict-of-interest payments.

FAIR Members' Soapbox Alerts to
CVD Patients, diabetics and others

FAIR Foundation members are now utilizing a very inexpensive and unique internet service to not only contact our country's President and Vice President for fair allocations in research, but at the same time they are collectively alerting thousands of citizens on the need for change. See a recent "Soapbox Alert" to citizens with cardiovascular disease (CVD) here and send one today!

Focus Disease: Cardiovascular Disease
(CVD = Heart Disease and Stroke)

  • Cardiovascular Disease is fatal: About 950,000 Americans die of heart disease and stroke each year, which amounts to one death every 33 seconds. That is 57 times the number reported for HIV/AIDS

  • Cardiovascular Disease is serious: Heart disease and stroke  account for 40% of all deaths in the USA and are the leading cause of deaths for both men and women

  • Cardiovascular Disease's Cost to Society: The cost of heart disease and stroke in the United States is projected to be $351 billion in 2003, including health care expenditures and lost productivity from death and disability.

  • Cardiovascular Disease is Prevalent: the CDC estimates that there are 61 million Americans living with heart disease and stroke as compared to 950,000 with HIV/AIDS.

  • Cardiovascular Disease and race: Afro-Americans are 10% (males) to 16% (females) more likely to have heart disease and stroke than Caucasians or Mexican-Americans

  • Fairness? The NIH is spending only $40 on each patient with Cardiovascular Disease  in research in 2003 versus $3,084 on each patient who has been identified as having AIDS

  • Cardiovascular Disease and all other diseases except HIV/AIDS would receive larger research allocations under the FAIR Foundation's policy.

The FAIR Foundation is growing fast, but we need more members to change Congress and the NIH. Please help us by posting this in chat rooms, internet support groups, and by forwarding it to your associates, friends and relatives with your recommendation that they join HERE (free). With strength in numbers, we WILL achieve fair and equitable NIH distributions for CVD as well as ALL other diseases

A disease’s mortality rate shall be given emphasis in determining allocations and other secondary factors shall be utilized to insure diseases that cause great suffering but have low mortality rates will also receive significantly increased funding.
