Note the unfair distribution for your disease below.

The NIH is spending $5,500 on each patient living with AIDS in 2003.

The NIH is spending $36 on each patient living with cardiovascular disease in 2003. (Indeed, the NIH will spend almost 3/4 billion dollars less on heart disease than on AIDS)

The NIH is spending $145 on each patient living with prostate disease in 2003.

The NIH is spending $161 on each patient living with Alzheimer's Disease in 2003.

The NIH is spending $70 on each patient living with diabetes in 2003.

The NIH is spending $20 on each patient living with hepatitis C in 2003.

The NIH is spending $398 on each patient living with Parkinson's Disease in 2003

The NIH is spending $3,258 on each patient living with West Nile Virus in 2003 (8,219 patients through 11/07/03)

DEATHS IN LATEST REPORTING PERIOD (2001)

Annual Number of Deaths from AIDS: 8,998 reported, with 372 in California of newly diagnosed patients in 2002. 122 in 2003 through 10/31/03
Annual Number of Deaths from Alzheimer's Disease: 53,679
Annual Number of Deaths from Diabetes: 71,252
Annual Deaths from Prostate Cancer: 30,714
Annual Deaths from hepatitis C: 10,000 to 12,000 (2002)
Annual Deaths from cardiovascular disease: 950,000
Annual Deaths from the flu (influenza): 36,000 (every year)
Annual Deaths from the West Nile Virus: 284 in 2002, 182 through 11/7/03 in 2003

(See notes below for detailed corroboration)

AIDS:
The NIH is spending $5,500 on each patient reported to be living with HIV/AIDS in 2003.
AIDS budget in 2003 = 2.8 Billion divided by 506,154 living with HIV and AIDS = $5,500
(For 2003-2004 NIH AIDS Budget go to http://www.nih.gov/news/fundingresearchareas.htm
Areas.htm

(For CDC chart showing total living with HIV and AIDS go to: http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/stats/hasr1302/table1.htm)

(For 2004 Congressional Research Report (non-partisan branch of the Library of Congress producing AIDS reports for politicians only) on Federal Spending on HIV/AIDS go to: http://fairfoundation.org/news_letter/2003_september.htm.

Cardiovascular Disease:
The NIH is spending
$36 on each patient living with cardiovascular disease in 2003. Cardiovascular Disease kills 950,000 compared to 8,963 (reported or 14,132 estimated) for AIDS.

Estimated 2003 budget for cardiovascular disease is $2.065 Billion.

Divide $2.065 Billion by 61 million Americans with heart disease =
$36
AIDS: $5,500 versus HEART DISEASE: $36
(For NIH chart on estimated 2002 disease expenditures go to:
nih.htm.
(61 million Americans with heart disease stat from the CDC here:
http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/aag/aag_cvd.htm

Prostate Disease:
The NIH is spending $145 on each patient living with prostate disease in 2003.
Anticipated 2003 budget for prostate disease is $408 Million. (nih.htm)
Divide $408 Million by 2.8 million men with prostate disease
AIDS: $5,500 versus Prostate Disease $145

Alzheimer's Disease
The NIH is spending $161 on each patient living with Alzheimer's Disease in 2003.
Anticipated 2003 budget for Alzheimer's Disease is $644 Million.
Divide $644 Million by 4 million Americans with Alzheimer's Disease = $161
AIDS: $5,500 versus ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE: $161

(For NIH chart on anticipated 2002 disease expenditures go to nih.htm
(4 million Americans with Alzheimer's Disease stat from the Alzheimer's Association at http://www.alz.org/AboutAD/overview.htm)

Diabetes:
The NIH is spending $70 on each patient living with diabetes in 2003.
Anticipated 2003 budget for diabetes is $845 Million.
Divide $845 Million by 12 million Americans with diabetes = $70
AIDS: $5,500 versus DIABETES: $70
(For NIH chart on anticipated 2002 disease expenditures go to nih.htm
(12 million Americans with diabetes stat from the American Diabetes Association)

Hepatitis C:
Compare to 103 Million research budget for HCV (nih.htm) for
The CDC has estimated the number of HCV patients at 1.8% of the population. 1.8% of 291,946,000 = 5.2 million with HCV = $20 per patient.

AIDS: $5,500 versus Hepatitis C: $20
AIDS deaths in 2001 of 8,963 (http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/stats/hasr1302/table21.htm) and plummeting HCV deaths, as we know, 10,000 - 12,000 and climbing NIH HCV deaths 2002 reported here (http://consensus.nih.gov/cons/116/091202116cdc_statement.htm)

West Nile Virus:
28 Million research budget for West Nile Virus in 2003 (nih.htm) for 8,219 cases reported in 2003  = $3,258 per patient.

Annual Number of Deaths from the West Nile Virus: in 2002 = 284, 182 in 2003 to 11/07/03. See here at the CDC: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/surv&controlCaseCount03.htm

Flu (influenza):
The flu (influenza) kills 4 times more Americans each year than AIDS. (AIDS 8,998 reported), Flu 36,000 average yearly).

Annual Number of Deaths from the Flu (influenza) here: flu_deaths.htm

Annual Number of Deaths in 2001 from AIDS, Alzheimer's Disease, Prostate Cancer and Diabetes are from the CDC here: (most recent reported period as of 3/14/03): http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr51/nvsr51_05.pdf (Page 14).

Year 2002 California death total from AIDS of 372 adults, click here: http://www.dhs.ca.gov/aids/Statistics/pdf/Stats2003/Oct03Stats.pdf  (Page 2).

Only 25 of the 50 states report AIDS deaths statistics to the CDC. The remaining 25, including CA and NY, would increase AIDS deaths statistics. For example, AIDS deaths in CA for 2002 for all patients (newly diagnosed plus diagnosed in the past) = 1,273 and New York would have a similar number. Even with the remaining 25 states reporting, the death rate for AIDS does not justify the disproportionate AIDS funding in comparison to all other diseases, including the 16 that kill more Americans than AIDS.
